Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not worth the money I would not recommend the basic docking station. It's lacking in ports for multiple monitors (which is what most people buy a docking station for). 1 VGA and 1 Display port. I would recommend going with a different product if you need better options for displays.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Docking station clunky The docking station works great but my old docking station allowed the laptop to just be set on and it automatically locked in place. This docking station requires you to use a somewhat clunky slide to lock the laptop in place. Additionally, it is difficult to know if you have the laptop lined up correctly when setting it on the docking station.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgraded Dock with Basic Functionality The Thinkpad Basic Docking Station for my P52s and L580 is the third Thinkpad dock I have owned, with the prior ones being the more traditional bottom docks for a T430s and a P50. I have traditionally been a big proponent of the docking stations, since I am frequently on the go, but like having LAN and multiple monitors when at my desk without having the hassle of connecting several cords. I was curious to try the new dock style, given the transition to the dual USB-C connectors. While the overall form factor of the docks is very similar, the newer version with USB-C connector takes a bit of getting used to, especially when attempting to dock the computer. I found it difficult to seat the computer properly at first. I recommend leaving the laptop closed when docking, as the new hinge style can get in the way of a proper docking procedure. Having the extended battery seems to make docking slightly easier, as the battery nestles in the dock to help with alignment. With the Thinkpad Basic Dock specifically, I found the lack of USB-C replication a big issue, as more and more devices and UHD monitors change over to the new standard. Additionally, the dock still features VGA and USB 2.0, which seem a bit antiquated now, and yet it has no HDMI. Also, for being geared to the business/work environment, the dock lacks a lock and key like older docks have featured, making security in open-concept workplaces more of a concern. I did try (gently) removing the computer with the dock still engaged, and the computer seems to stay latched for the most part, although it does not seem as secure as previous designs. The dock and connectors would likely be ruined if one was successful in separating the two pieces. The dock uses the slim tip 90W adapter instead of the 65W USB-C charger, although I am not sure if this has a huge impact on the charging rate. I would have prefered another USB-C cable charger, so I could use it interchangeably with the laptop when travelling, or with coworkers’ laptops in a pinch. Having looked at the specs of the new Thinkpad Ultra Dock, I would recommend power users take a look at that dock instead, as it replicates all the relevant ports needed for a workstation set-up, instead of rendering them underutilized as a dock connector. For regular users, a USB-C plugin dock may be sufficient and more flexible than this dock, especially when travelling. The build quality and ease-of-use of the dock is what one expects of a business grade solution though, and will likely last the lifetime of the computer. If cost is a big concern, or backwards compatibility with older equipment is needed, then the Thinkpad Basic Docking Station may be a worthy accessory for certain users.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor Docking Station Bought one of these because of the price but come to realize, that in order to display an external monitor, the dock's display port connection requires DP to DP from monitor to dock. NO HDMI/DVI to DP; which sucks because my current monitors does not have a DP output. The only workaround to connect my 2 external monitors to this is via VGA to the dock and HDMI/DVI to HDMI port on my T480. Which sucks because sometimes when I'm in a rush and need to undock my T480, I have to remember to pull the HDMI cable first, otherwise monitors come crashing down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little pricy, but worth it. The Basic dock is a worthwhile product. I was able to hook up two external monitors. One with the display output and the other with the VGA output. I had only one issue where sometimes one monitor would not connect, but I think it came down to the dock not being plugged into my computer all the way. I have only experienced the problem twice, but it resolved itself after a few minutes both times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable, solid connection I will always love mechanical dock connections. They keep things so much more organized. This one fits my laptop perfectly, even with the cylindrical rear battery, makes a positive connection and is durable enough to survive living on my desk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great dock I like this dock. It is actually more reliable than the Thunderbolt 3 ThinkPad dock, because it is able to resume from sleep and keep everything connected. With the Thunderbolt dock, I have to disconnect and reconnect the USB-C cable after resuming in order to use the mouse, keyboard, and monitor, which I thought wasn't very user-friendly. So a big improvement on that part. However, it would be nice if this dock included a lock and keys. It has a slot for a Kensington lock, but you need to purchase it separately. It also took me a couple minutes to figure out how to connect the laptop to the dock, but once I got that down it was pretty straightforward. Overall I am pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Docking station gives enough plugins Dock gives me more options to plug things in such as speakers, which sound amazing now. My only complaint is the directions are just pictures and it took me a while to figure out how to attach it to my Think PAD T590, as I have never used a dock before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard to dock I've used a docking station for many years, it would just snap in. Purchased a new Lenovo Think Pad and docking station about a month ago. I find it very difficult to dock. The design requires lining up 3 connectors at the same time by sliding them into the side of the lattop. Usually takes a while and many attempts before it finally lines up. Looks pretty flimsy-don’t expect it to last very long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb addition to my 6th Gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon I use my Thinkpad X1 Carbon for work, so I am constantly taking it on the road and then bringing it home and plugging into a keyboard and monitor to use in a "Desktop" mode. My home desktop setup has a nice LED monitor, ethernet, a high quality USB mouse, a speaker setup, and the occasional misc. other USB device. This meant coming home and plugging in all of these devices and sometimes a USB port extender. Then, when heading back on the road, unplugging everything. The ThinkPad Basic Docking Station (this is the American Standard Plug version, BTW) contains a couple of USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A ports, a couple of USB 2.0 Type A ports, 1 Display Port, 1 VGA port, a 3.5mm combo audio jack (it behaves the same was as the combo jack on the laptop itself,) and a Gigabit ethernet jack. With this setup, I have my monitor, mouse, speaker, ethernet, and any other USB devices I need permanently plugged into the dock. (Of course, it also provides power.) When I get home, I simply slide my Thinkpad X1 Carbon into the dock and I am instantly set up for a home office desktop setup. One button on the top side of the dock turns the laptop on and off, and you can easily slide the laptop into and out of the dock with the laptop on, i.e. you do not need to turn the laptop off before inserting it into the dock or removing it. That sounds trivial, but more than once I have been working on the docked system, needed to pull the laptop and go into another room with it, while keeping everything on and the programs I am working on still in place, look something up, enter it into the programs, then walk back into the office and slide the laptop back into the dock, and it immediately connects to the monitor (and everything else.) Very handy. The one caveat that you need to be aware of: you cannot connect two monitors at once to this dock, even though it has both a Display Port and a VGA port, you cannot connect two monitors at the same time. You will need to upgrade to the Pro version if you want to use two monitors simultaneously. Other than that, it just works and it has made my life much simpler. I'd hate to work without it now that I have it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy duty machine I bought this one 3 month ago for my Lenoveo ThinkPad T480S and it works more than great. I stay for hours every day working on my laptop, and I prefer big monitor to make my eyes feel comfortable. This is why I bought this one. I'm connecting 2 monitors to my docking by using two different kind of cable (VGA and Display Port to HDMI. One advice I have to you if you want to connect this one to the monitor by using a cable Display Port form the docking to HDMY in the monitor. You should buy active convertor from Display Port to HDMI because regular convertor would not work. I highly recommend this great machine to the people who prefer to work from big monitor with some extra features like the battery charger that I found it very beneficial. There is one of the USBs in this docking working as normal USB beside you can use it to charge you phone even if the laptop was off. Also, This docking station is a well-made one that makes my life easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ThinkPad Basic Docking Station gets the job done! I am so glad to be able to use this great docking station that I received from Lenovo last week. Out-of -the box, the unit has been a real breeze to setup, and all connections worked as expected. The locking mechanism sets in place and secures the laptop really good. There is plenty of options for video, audio, and USB connectors on the back of the unit. The Lenovo ThinkPad basic docking station comes with a external power supply, so no need to worry about power! The USB-3.0 powered audio headphone output plug provides excellent audio, that can be used for high quality headphones, or external quality amplifier/receiver. This same plug can be used as mic-in/line-in input. By using external cable jack, it is possible to use both headphones and microphone (not provided in-the-box). The unit looks and feels very sturdy, with Lenovo build quality. One benefit of this docking station is that you can lock the base with a key (not provided in-the-box) . This is great feature for people who need to leave their valued laptop alone for parts of the day. Currently I am connected to my Lenovo ThinkVision display, and my laptop monitor, to achieve two-screen display configuration. I really like 'clean look' of my home workstation, free of clutter! Great job, Lenovo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Docking Station I like this docking station, although I had some initial difficulties getting my laptop to dock. I have used docking stations in the past where the laptop just kind of slides into place. With this dock, I need to press the laptop a bit firmly down, before I can lock it into position. Once I figured that out, it's been working great. It also has enough ports for my use, and even includes a VGA port, which actually comes in handy for me.
Date published: 2019-02-15T00:00:00-05:00
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic means easy to install and does it's job. Easy to install and use. The connection is reasonably secure. Using this while working remotely from home to enable dual monitor and add on USB devices. My only disappointment is that the monitor connections are only VGA and Display Port, my monitors are a bit older and do not have Display Port so I needed to buy a dongle that let me connect a DVI into the Display Port, but with that it all works well. To get a 5 star I would have liked a DVI and HDMI input and 1 or 2 more USBs, but after all this is the "Basic" and does what it is intended for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hit out of the park As an owner of an insurance agency, I am on the road along with riding a desk as required. I switched to a laptop years ago and am a big fan of the Lenovo Thinkpad. They are rugged, dependable laptops that can take some punishment and still fire up. I always had struggled with the desk environment and the smaller screen without a keyboard. ENTER THE DOCKING STATION. Excellent configuration that when used with an external screen (I also use it on a mounted mobile arm for adjustability,) and a wireless keyboard, I now remember why there is a data entry pad on keyboards. I have used the docking station for a few months and would not give it up. No reading glasses neede and quick snap in place makes the a great multiplier of my energies and skills. Very pleased with the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recommend. Slick, not bulky. Rests nicely for typing purposes. I'm even able to use an old connecting cable to my second monitor (display port). My only questions are: 1. Was there supposed to be a key with this to lock in the laptop? 2. Why does it cost so much? I got it at a "good deal" but I wouldn't pay the asking price from Lenovo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old guy likes docking station I haven't used a docking station since the late 80s. I'm not sure I needed this, but it is so convenient and easy to use that it was worth the money. I also have more ports than I think I will ever use. One advantage is that I was able to plug in a cabled mouse (hey, I'm old and can deal with a wire here and there). So, when I dock my T580 I have immediate access to a mouse that for me is faster than the eraser head and touchpad. As I learned decades ago the best equipment for the job is what you know how to use. The docking station is some small and light that I can take it on the road with me. Great addition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Features, but with a Drawback I got this product two days ago and I've been using it without any problems! I like how there is a groove to accommodate for Thinkpads with the extra large battery. The dock gives more USB ports, a VGA, and a DisplayPort port. However, this docking station consumes the USB-C ports. This would not allow for the usage of an external GPU. But other than the consumption of the USB-C ports, this product is reliable and works as intended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from t580 doesnt lock in, poor ports selection I got branch new t580 and this dock brand new. Tried plugging laptop in - but left button wouldnt come out. After playing around with it for hors and watching numerous youtube videos I finally figured that dock sits too low and if you have an extended battery it doesnt work. Since online on Lenovo website this is not made obvious - I now have to return the dock and get an external usb-c one. But yeah - these new usb-c side docks seem to be so much worse then prev. generation ones. Ohh - and number of avaialble ports is just pathetic. Single DP connector - really?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All ok except for DisplayPort ** As of this writing, June 2018, it appears this dock doesn't work with the T480s if you need to use the Displayport from the dock to connect to an HDMI monitor. At my office, I have multiple Thinkpads (T30s to T470s) with Series 3 docking stations. I just bought a T480s, the first of the upgrades . The T480s runs on a USB-C power/dock, so all power bricks and docking stations from the past will not work with it. I bought this Basic Dock with the T480s, all direct from Lenovo.com. My custom-build T480s is excellent, just like all of our ThinkPads. The new broadband modem beat the heck out of the older Sierra modems for cell phone data access. This dock, however, is a problem. I won't replace the other older ThinkPads until the T480s pairing with this dock is fixed. The problem is that the DisplayPort of the docking station cannot output across a regular cable to a monitor with an HDMI port. That's odd, because my Series 3 docks all did so just fine. I've called tech support twice, had a replacement dock shipped, and neither the first nor the replacement dock could output from its Displayport across a cable to an HDMI monitor. Both tech agents were stumped. There wasn't a white paper on this, nor a driver or firmware update flagged to fix the problem. Could be something really foolish, like Lenovo built these with passive DisplayPorts instead of to the active Displayport P++ standard which converts Displayport to HDMI (and DVI, for that matter). Regardless, I'm postponing upgrading my other laptops and docks at my small business until this is fixed. I don't want my employees not to be able to use their big monitors when at their desks.
