Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ink seems to vanish. Have been using these cartridges w/ MFC-J450DW. I use the printer rarely for grey-scale printing.. I am very certain that the color ink cartridges gradually empty themselves without any color printing. Perhaps it happens when the cartridge heads are cleaned, but it seems like a scam that costs me more money. Would love for the company to address this concern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ok I have found that I have to reconnect this wire-less machine to my computer and re-install it prior to each session of use. Once re-connected the machine works very well. I did everything the instructions said to do. Once the computer is turned off for the session, the next time it is booted up, I have found that the printer is termed OFF LINE and once again has to be re-installed. Frustrating

I do not know of another name brand copier that works as well and last as long as the Brothers copier. Everyone should have one and they would never go anywhere else for a copier. Their service is also great. They stand behind their product 100 percent. My rating on this product is a 10.

I was unable to set up the wireless or fax functions of this printer as the directions were too complicated. My advice is to make these devices more user friendly. Simplicity is the key.

The one thing I don't like is if I'm getting spam fax I cannot stop the transmission. I'm a MAC user and it works so well with all my devices wirelessly! Quality print is great, easy to us scanner & like the interface of that too. It doesn't take up much space either.

After a couple of months of trying to make this work i have given up and just use it through the USB. The software was also causing my computer to crash (Dell inspiron 1525) until I took the software off of my startup menu. Other than that it prints fine but won't scan...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for the money Overall I'm extremely pleased with this product. I haven't had it long enough to judge how quickly the ink will run out. As a pastor, I type my sermons on an A5 format. When I print these sermons out, they're centered. I contact support twice and the response I got back was a copy of the various settings I can use within the menu on the machine. After thinking about it, I finally figured out to cut my paper to 8X 51/2 and then print. Wish I would have thought about that earlier and saved the aggravation of getting no real help from support.

I am talking about everything - print quality, printing speed, reliability, price, low print cartridge expense, and ease of use. The flat glass surface is great for scanning and copying large documents, but the printer is compact enough to be a space saver. This is my second Brother's printer and I could not hae made a better choice for the price.

So far this printer has exceeded my expectations. It was extremely easy to set up and connect to my wireless network. This is probably one of the easiest to use printers I have owned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An improvement over my old printers. Excellent copies. One little know holding the cover to the p;rinter inks broke off. So far, the remaining knob is useful and I can close the cover properly. Also, a lot faster than the MFC 3360 and the DCP 165C.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from decent printer Only one fairly minor problem. The printer told me I had a paper jam when I didn't. Following the printers instructions to clear the jam didn't work and I couldn't get the printer back in operation. I finally decided to unplug the printer and then replug it in and hit "start". That worked. This has happened twice. The first time I panicked as I couldn't get the printer to work for about a half hour until I figured out the unplugging thing. The second time I didn't panic and quickly unplugged the printer and got it back into operation. Otherwise there were no other problems with a pretty good printer. I do wish it held more paper though.

I was unknowledgeable on how to install it. Even though, I was unknowledgeable on how to install the product, I had to contact tech. After speaking to tech. support to help me install it, it worked great afterwards. I learned more about the printer & the various options I had that were available.

Haven't needed to fax yet (and may never). Wireless set-up instructions are confusing, to say the least. Set-up wizard is also confusing. Maybe it's me, but I've been playing with computers since DOS. Curious as to whether I can run USB connection and WiFi at the same time. Documentation is no help. Still like the printer and would buy another.

When I got it and loaded the ink in, it seemed to print fine, I thought ok this is great. Well that did not last long at all, I than had to change the ink cartridge and well that was the end of the honeymoon. The black ink skips all the time when printing, I have to keep cleaning it and restarting to print again, still skipping when printing. I can honestly say this was a mistake and will not make this again

I did finally have to get ink, but the high yield is just that. I have used all it's functions and had no problems at all. Best investment for the money I could have done.

The fax setup was more difficult and the instructions lacked specifics. A call to Brother service fixed the problem. The double sided printing is great. The ink cartridges are easy to change. I would recommend this for a low volume family situation.

All are replacements for previous big name printers that gave nothing much but trouble. The lasers have worked flawlessly for years. The MFC J450 DW has done likewise since day 1. I called in and after 10-15 minutes I talked to a Tech/Rep. and he/we had the problem resolved in just a few minutes and now I am Good-To-Go with all systems working good. That is the way to give Customer service and encouragement. Just one thing they/you need a better & Faster phone answering Response - Time. I suggest the need to transfer incoming calls to wherever & whoever is available on your Worldly System, Folks!

Finally used the menu to clean the cartridges and it worked again. But the cleaning has to be done pretty often. This printer often says offline, which prohibits printing at all. Will not buy Brother again.

The software CD was out of date, so I downloaded software from Brother's website...with download complete, no driver...The download instructions said I should "extract the driver files using a disk utility," at which time I ordered an HP to replace my previous HP that worked like a champ for years without downloads or extracting...written instruction booklet was completely useless...online instructions incomplete...The most I could ever get it to do was display "check connection." Who has hours to spend setting up simple office equipment?

The only negative thing I have to say is that it does not come with a book. I want to scan in photos and it wouldn't let me change them to a 4 x 6 size would only scan in at 8 1/2 x 11. I had to go on-line and after searching the web site for 30 minutes found what I thought to be my manual but it wasn't. Finally found how to change setting only it didn't change the outcome of the scanning in of pictures, they still scanned in at 8 1/2 x 11. Frustrated with trying to find an explanation it was easier to give them to someone else to just scan in on their computer/printer.

I would love to have another Kodak because this thing doesnt stand a chance against it. The wireless print function was instant, the wireless scan feature took a little tweaking. I do not use the FAX. The things that endear this printer to me are all the little, unexpected benefits/features. No matter what I need to accomplish, there always seems to be a way. Indicates to me that Brother put a lot of thought into design of the printer.

I have used others such as HP and Canon. Only fault I found is with paper tray. It isn't very rigid in structure may easily be damaged. Be careful when removing and refilling.

At the time I had a Dell all in one that had served me excellently for 8 years. The only problem with my Dell was the cost and frequency of using the ink. I decided to purchase the Brother copier. I've had it for two weeks. I am very pleased with the ink quality and speed of copying.I will write a review of the ink duration later. Thank you for an excellent product.

So far I've experienced no problems with my machine, and the directions and manuals are easy to read and understand. My last machine had a print head issue after 7-8 years of service, at least. I would recommend this machine to anyone that wants a good home multi-tasking printer. On another note, if the cost of repair for a print head would come down, I would fix my other Brother's Printer and have two.

The next time I needed the printer, it wouldn't wirelessly connect. I had to search for my ssid and type in the password. Since then, I have to repeat the ssid and p/w each time I use it wirelessly. Finally gave up and hooked up a usb cable. So much for wireless. My computer is an ASUS x551c running windows 10.

Extremely easy to setup - I had it up and running via wireless on both my computers in about 15 minutes. The controls are enough like my old one there was no learning curve. Print quality is very good and extremely fast. If this one lasts as long as the old one, I'll be a happy camper.

The only reason I bought this is to have a color wireless printer. I have spent way too much money buying cartridges when it eats the ink cleaning itself. I hardly ever need the color function so this is a waste of money.

I have not had it long enough to assess cartridge life. It was easy to set up, both wirelessly and USB. The Google web print was also easy to set up, which I needed for use with my Chromebook. The only odd thing is the internal routing of the USB and telephone cables--it would have been better if these ports were on the back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Disappointed As for black ink printing, the copy comes out faded. I printed in color on glossy stock, and that came out acceptable. When I tried to print on card stock it jammed every time. I have had several standard paper jams in all parts of the printer. The Automatic Document Feeder inserts a blank top margin of slightly over 1/2 inch which results in chopping off the bottom 1/2 inch of the scanned document. Not knowing this has cost me many hours of verifying every page, and doing most of them over. More ink and more paper, too. Many documents I must scan page by page on the glass. I haven't even tried the Fax feature yet.

I've had to have tech help 3 times. They were very patient and helpful. However, every time I need to do something new, I have to practically reconnect the printer to my computer from scratch. I have asked 2 or 3 times for the CD and booklet to be sent, with promises it will be done. Still don't have them. Not happy. Would never buy again and, in general, I like Brother products.

The document feed works fine, the color printing leaves a lot to be desired. The colors all look washed out. Scanning is a royal pain. I have never been able to get it to scan properly. The aggravation with this printer is so high I'm considering going back to my old printer even though it doesn't have the automatic document feed.

Turning the printer on and off is confusing.It is difficult to tell when the machine is off or in sleep mode. The printer does not respond quickly enough to the commands so one starts over and then finds out the printer is just SLOWWWWWW responding. The printing speed is slow.

I had to make almost a dozen calls to resolve connection issues, and I'm still not sure the scanner is connected. Be prepared to call the support center at 9 a.m, unless you want to wait a half hour or more. They must have a small staff or a huge # of problems. The manual gives incomplete info for MAC users. Reps sometimes send printed instructions but these come late and don't always relate to the problem I described. I've hung up thinking a problem was resolved only to find that it isn't. On one occasion, after being disconnected twice, I finally reached an agent. I had been on hold for 25 minutes. When he learned I have a MAC he told me he'd have to connect me to a MAC agent. I'd already spent over an hour on the phone and couldn't wait any longer. I'd never recommend the MFC-J450DW to anyone. I'd never recommend any Brother product to anyone.

I like the duplex function. Only one time the feeder pushed out 2 sheets versus one in about 70 pages printed. Not the fastest printer (with the Fast Print setting) in the word, but it gets the job done. The printed colors could be a little richer in my opinion.

I am accustomed to quality printers and used HPs for years. Decided to try a Brother as my sister has one. I am not pleased.

I needed an universal WiFi device, and so far it proved to be great. Easy setup, everything works as it should, even the iPhone printing. Double sided printing is handy, saves paper. I sometimes have to use Fax, it works great, does not interfere with my answering system, so I leave the phone cable plugged in all the time. Bottom line, it was cheap to buy, super easy to set up, and is reliable. I only had it for a couple of months, so I am not sure how the ink consumption is going to work out, but so far, so good. 5 STARS

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on ink. Love this printer! I had been using a Canon Pixma printer but I was going broke putting ink in it. Ink usage was my number one reason for getting a new printer. I don't do a lot of printing, but I spent almost $175 in ink last year. I purchased my Brother printer in mid November, and have been printing out holiday recipes (more printing than normal) and I am still using the partial ink cartridges that came with the printer! At this rate the printer will pay for itself compared to the Canon. I highly recommend this printer

Well, if you're hooking it directly to your PC via USB cable, then I would give it 5 stars. If you're using it wireless, then I'd give it ZERO, so I'm compromising and giving it a 3. When it works, it works flawlessly. I love it. Unfortunately, every time we have a power glitch, or have to reset our router, it's gone, and refuses to reconnect without a LOT a messing around. You CAN'T use the automatic recognition feature - doesn't work. You have to go to to your router page, find the IP address (yes, the router still sees it, then do a manual reinstall, which sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. I'm giving up and sacrificing some precious desk space so I can directly connect it until it can be replaced. Would I buy another Brother? Not sure. Would LIKE to give them a second try, but the fact that they haven't fixed this yet (I am using the latest downloads from their site) argues against the gamble.

Haven't done any greeting cards or anything major that I use for. This is a printer for "at home" and for my computer needs. I highly recommend for anyone who wants a simple printer to print things from the web or their home computer. Easy set up and I love how the paper goes in - the tray comes out! It's great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Economical and Practical Purchased this unit to replace HP printer that kept recycling setup and leaked black ink. The OEM ink for the J450DW runs about 50% less than HP. The LC101, 103 series inks were not available at either Sam's Club or Walmart. I ordered replacement OEM ink via eBay. Not sure is remanufactured ink is suitable. The printer itself performs adequately. The only problems I've had is after loading more paper which requires the tray to be remove, it will occasionally spit more pages. Also when printing pictures on glossy, the glossy side is down and under the paper in the tray. Mechanism picks up sheets from the bottom of the tray. So far I'm pleased with the performance versus the price. I did purchase the additional square deal warranty because of previous printer problems. Long term reliability is always my concern.

You cannot print pages directly from Chrome on Windows 10, a customer service agent confirmed this problem. You have to save the page as a PDF, then print. I will probably not keep the printer very long. The print quality is good, but way too much of a hassle to get working consistently.

Activated it using the printer and getting it to recognize the wireless device was a little complicated but got it to work. Only problem doing this way is you don't get all the programs to make it easy to use. Tried the download option but it wanted me to hook up the printer using a usb cord which wasn't supplied. Tried the cd and again it wanted me to hook up the usb cord. If that is how you have to get it onto your computer to utilize all the programs it should be provided and explained in the directions for set up. Found an old usb plug that worked and finally got it uploaded. Problem now is that the control center 4 that makes it easy to use from the computer doesn't work. Also the directions to scan directly off the printer only worked thru the web service. The multi document paper feeder doesn't work for scanning but does for copying. Go figure. Got tired of trying to figure out the problems and using it the way it is. If it wasn't given as a gift I would return the printer as my old one worked fine for my needs. The multi document feeder was the focal point of the present but doesn't really work so still doing it individually by hand. With all the special gizmos I wouldn't recommend this printer as it isn't that easy to get all the functions to work correctly.

I didn't need the fax part but I wasn't going to worry about that. Who knows maybe some day I would. Well, the machine came and first off, it was very heavy. I was surprised. The footprint bigger than I hoped, but that was easy to get over. It was quieter than my old HP (bonus). Here is where it went south. It took forever to print. Meaning I would hit print and then it would think/process the info and then finally print. Another problem was it wouldn't also work with wifi. Sometimes it would other times no. When it didn't sometime you had to restart, sometimes you had to reset the network settings. It was not convenient at all. It is certainly not the plug and play that I had hoped for.

I purchase the Brother MFC-J450DW Compact Inkjet All-in-One to replace an out-of-date 10 year old flatbed scanner (took forever to scan, bulky color printer (slower than molasses), and added a fax (comes in handy once in a while.) The foot print is about 50% of those two items I retired and gave me more desk space. Setup was easy and wireless networking was simple. The fax works flawlessly without involving your computer in the process at all. It is an exceptional value for the money and has my complete recommendation. I now have two Brother devices I am very happy I purchase. The other is a Brother HL-2270DW Laser printer purchased 03/2011 which still runs perfectly after intense usage (about 35 reams of paper, both sides). Buy it you’ll like it.

It was so east to install and easier to hookup to the wireless network, the wizard did it all. More importantly, the EZ ink always works better than the genuine Brother ink that we get. The Brother ink clogs.

I think the paper tray could be more substantial, the paper guides are difficult to maneuver. And it is not easy to get the paper out when re-loading with envelopes. It would be much easier if there were a finger dip in the tray.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A few drawbacks Paper feed sometimes erratic. The printer pulls in too many sheets at once. Periodically goes to "Offline" status. When "Off line" it is very difficult to get it back on line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too Many Bugs When it prints it works fine. Unfortunately, I have had it repeatedly freeze up in the middle of printing jobs when using a USB connection and not print at all when using a Wi-Fi connection. Brother support has been helpful, but the printer still unpredictably fails to print correctly. I have never had these problems with any other printer I have owned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Value! Outstanding value! Easy set up. Does all that we need. No issues and excellent print quailty. We've had printers that were 4x the money, and this little jewel out performs them.
