After nearly four decades working in and around the Canadian education system, I have seen countless technologies arrive with the promise of transforming learning. Some have had a lasting impact, while others didn’t.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are different because they are not simply adding another digital layer to the classroom. When implemented thoughtfully, they have the potential to make learning more experiential, more engaging and more relevant to the real-world skills students will need beyond graduation.

As a National Education Strategist at CDW Canada, I regularly speak with education leaders, chief information officers, IT managers, technology directors and educators who are exploring how immersive technologies can support their learning objectives. While the excitement is real, so are the practical questions around cost, infrastructure, device management and educator readiness.

In my experience, successful AR and VR initiatives begin with a clear understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges. Technology should never drive the learning strategy. Instead, it should support educational outcomes and enhance the experiences we want students to have.

Let's look at some of the key challenges Canadian institutions face and why many are choosing to invest in immersive learning technologies.

Before schools and postsecondary institutions can realize the value of AR and VR, they must address several practical barriers that often influence approval and implementation decisions.

Budget and funding constraints

One of the first concerns I hear from education leaders is cost.

Introducing AR and VR into a learning environment involves more than purchasing headsets. Institutions must also consider compatible devices, device management, software licences, content subscriptions, maintenance and ongoing support. For organizations operating within fixed budgets, it can be challenging to demonstrate immediate return on investment.

The most successful institutions take a phased approach, aligning investments with educational priorities and identifying opportunities where immersive learning can deliver measurable value.

Infrastructure and device management

Immersive experiences depend on a strong technology foundation. Reliable wireless connectivity, sufficient bandwidth, modern endpoints and effective device management practices all play important roles in the success of AR and VR programs. Schools with aging infrastructure may need to modernize key components before immersive learning can be deployed at scale.

As with any major technology initiative, planning the underlying environment is just as important as selecting the devices themselves.

In my experience, educator confidence is often the difference between a technology pilot that fades away and a program that delivers long-term value.

From improving experiential learning to aiding pathway programs, AR and VR can prove  beneficial in several ways, as described below.

1. Making learning experiential and applied

One of the greatest strengths of AR and VR is their ability to transform abstract concepts into interactive experiences.

Rather than reading about a process or watching it unfold on a screen, students can explore environments, systems and procedures in immersive ways. Such experiences would otherwise be difficult or impossible to replicate in a classroom.

This approach aligns particularly well with programs such as Ontario's Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), Alberta's Career and Technology Studies (CTS) and British Columbia's Youth TRAIN in Trade Program, where hands-on learning plays a central role.

When students can engage directly with concepts, learning often becomes more meaningful and easier to retain.

2. Increasing student engagement and motivation

Student engagement remains one of the most important factors influencing educational success.

AR and VR naturally encourage participation because they place learners at the centre of the experience. Students become active participants rather than passive observers.

I've seen how immersive learning can spark curiosity, particularly among learners who respond well to visual or hands-on instruction. When paired with clear learning objectives, these technologies can help students better understand how classroom learning connects to future educational pathways and career opportunities.

For many students, that real-world connection makes all the difference.

3. Supporting skilled trades pathways

Canada continues to face growing demand for skilled trades professionals, making career-connected learning increasingly important.

However, providing students with access to authentic job sites and equipment can be difficult due to cost, safety requirements, scheduling challenges and resource limitations.

Virtual reality offers a practical solution.

Using immersive simulations, students can explore construction sites, manufacturing facilities and transportation environments in safe, controlled settings. They can develop familiarity with workplace procedures, investigate complex systems and build confidence before participating in hands-on training.

VR cannot replace real-world experience, but it can help students arrive better prepared when those opportunities become available.

Clinical placements, labs and real-world training opportunities are often limited, making it difficult for students to gain repeated exposure to important scenarios.

One example comes from the University of New Brunswick's Moncton campus , which integrates VR simulations into its health programs and delivers more than 100 immersive scenarios annually. These simulations are paired with structured debriefing sessions that reinforce learning and support clinical decision-making.

When used alongside traditional instruction, immersive learning can help strengthen student understanding and increase confidence before entering clinical environments.

Not every student has equal access to specialized facilities, field placements or workplace learning opportunities.

Geography, local resources and community partnerships can all influence the experiences available to learners.

This is where AR and VR can play an important role.

By creating consistent digital experiences, schools can provide students with exposure to environments and opportunities that might not otherwise be accessible. This can be especially valuable for rural, remote or underserved communities where physical access to specialized learning experiences may be limited.

What I find particularly interesting about AR and VR is how naturally they align with many of the priorities already guiding Canadian education systems.

These technologies support:

  • Inquiry-based learning
  • Problem-based learning
  • Experiential learning
  • Career-connected learning
  • Digital fluency development
  • Competency-based education

The most successful implementations start with a learning goal and then identify where immersive technologies can strengthen the experience. The focus should always remain on pedagogy first and technology second.

That principle has not changed throughout my career and I don't expect it to change anytime soon.
