As Microsoft continues to evolve its data and analytics ecosystem, a significant shift is underway: Power BI Premium per capacity (P-SKU) is being retired, and customers are encouraged to transition to Microsoft Fabric (F-SKU). This change marks a strategic move toward a more unified, scalable and integrated data and analytics platform.

Why is Power BI Premium being retired?

Microsoft is consolidating its analytics offerings to streamline purchasing and management. Power BI Premium was managed through Microsoft 365, while Microsoft Fabric leverages Azure infrastructure, offering:

  • Advanced cost management, clearly detailing exactly what services you are consuming
  • Scalable capacities services at many different requirement levels
  • Integrated analytics reduces complexities of managing complex data scenarios and pipelines
  • Centralized solution for data transformation, data engineering and data science
  • User-friendly business intelligence tools for data visualization, exploration and insights
  • Unified data governance, centralizing the data management and data compliance of your entire organization in one place

This consolidation simplifies operations and aligns with Microsoft’s broader vision for a single, end-to-end data platform.

How to transition from Power BI Premium

Sales and renewals of Power BI Premium P-SKUs have ended in July 2024. The last chance for customers without existing enterprise agreements to renew their Power BI Premium subscriptions was in February 2025.

  • Customers with existing enterprise agreement are able to continue using Power BI Premium until the end of their current agreement.
  • After expiration of licences or enterprise agreements all customers must transition to Microsoft Fabric (F-SKU).
  • Microsoft offers a 30-day free grace period for customers with Power BI Premium capacities from the moment licences are expired.
  • If migration is not completed, customers have up to 90 days from the expiration of their Premium licence agreement to access Power BI data (reports, dashboards, datasets, etc - all objects living in the Premium capacity) and perform migration
  • All customer data living in Power BI Premium expired capacities will be deleted after 90 days.
  • Microsoft offers a Fabric trial SKU for 60 days, helping customers to alleviate costs and try the new Microsoft Fabric capacity.

Why move to Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is more than just a replacement – it's a next-generation data platform that integrates data ingestion, transformation, analysis, modeling, publishing and distribution:

/

With Fabric, you gain:

  • Seamless integration across the data lifecycle
  • Improved performance and scalability
  • Better cost control through Microsoft Fabric Capacities
  • Support for modern data architecture like lakehouses and data meshes

What happens if you don’t migrate?

  • After 30 days: Operations will be throttled (e.g., 20-second delays on interactive actions).
  • After 90 days: You may lose access to your data.

Microsoft recommends completing your migration within the 30-day grace period to avoid disruptions.
